Secular questions

Can I visit the Vatican Library, Vatican Secret Archives?

Not at present.  The Vatican Apostolic Library, dating back to the fourteenth century, includes about 800,000 volumes, 80,000 manuscripts, 10,000 incunabula and 100,000 engravings.

The Vatican Library has been closed to the public for refurbishing work since 14 July 2007 and is expected to remain closed for three years. Please click the link in the right-hand column to view the Library's collections online.

The Vatican Secret Archives hold documents collected over the centuries by Vatican representatives throughout the world. Did you know that the shelving used to house this collection is several hundred kilometres long?

Please visit the official website for a virtual tour and the information on the Secret Archives' opening to researchers and students.
